In August 2022, I successfully completed the CRCM examination. Below is a summary of my preparation efforts with links to resources I used and created. Hopefully, this information will be helpful to anyone currently planning to take the exam.
ABA’s CRCM Exam Online Prep Course
My primary study resource for the exam was the ABA’s CRCM Exam Online Prep course. The couse features a comprehensive series of videos by Carl Pry, which I found exceptionally well-organized and easy to digest.
- Pros: Includes a full practice exam and high-quality video lectures.
- Cons: The course is expensive: $1,045 for non-members at that time. If your budget (or your employer’s) allows for it, this is an excellent resource for preparation.
Study Notes
While moving through the modules, I synthesized the material into my own study notes, supplementing them with external sources. I found that the act of writing the notes was just as important as reading them later. You can view a copy of my CRCM study notes here.
Flash Cards
I also created a big stack of flash cards to remember key terms and rules. This was a very effective study method, allowing me to drill myself until I had everything memorized.
The Exam
I sat for the exam at a proctored testing center. Be prepared for strict security; you’ll need to store all personal items (keys, phone, wallet) in a locker before entering. One of the best features of the computer-based test is that the screen will notify you of your pass/fail status immediately upon completion.
